The experience

You leave Jakarta with hotel pickup and travel by private vehicle to Bogor, a city in West Java known for its gardens and cultural sites. The day centers on the Bogor Botanical Gardens, a 87-hectare collection built by German botanists starting in 1817 and now home to 15,000 species of trees and plants. The gardens draw crowds especially on weekends, but your guide walks you through the grounds and explains the history that ties them to the Pajajaran kingdom of the Sunda era.

The tour also takes you to a Hindu temple where Prabu Siliwangi, a Sundanese king, is venerated as a father figure of the region. Nearby on Salak Mountain sits Cinangka waterfall, one of the best waterfall spots in the area and a place locals camp and rest. You stop there to experience the site before moving on to meet a local wayang golek puppet maker. Wayang golek is Sundanese puppet theater performed with gamelan instruments. The puppets were historically used by Hindu, Muslim and Sundanese communities to teach religion. Watching the craftsperson work gives you a direct look at how these puppets are made.

Lunch is included during the day. The entire outing runs 9 to 10 hours, with your guide speaking English throughout. Your vehicle is air-conditioned, and parking and fuel surcharge are covered in the price. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health, or for pregnant travelers.
