The experience

You leave Jakarta in an air-conditioned vehicle and head south to Bandung, the capital of West Java and Indonesia's third-largest city. The drive takes you to the heart of the city, where Gedung Sate (an elegant Indo-European colonial building with manicured gardens) stands as Bandung's most recognizable landmark. From there, the tour moves to Braga Street, a narrow pedestrian avenue lined with chic cafes, boutiques and restaurants that gave Bandung its nickname, the Paris of Java, back in the 1920s.

The day includes a stop at a factory outlet to browse local denim, t-shirts, shoes and batik, then moves to a cultural performance featuring puppet shows, traditional dance, angklung orchestras and arumba. At the end of the show, you're invited to play angklung and dance alongside the performers. The tour also takes in the Geology Museum, one of Indonesia's oldest, where displays of mineral stones, crystals, fossils and meteorites show the country's geological history. Lunch and bottled water are provided throughout the day.
