The Cathedral, built in gothic style in 1891, sits on Jalan Lapangan Banteng Utara with a high tower and stained-glass windows; inside are three altars arranged in a semi-circle and an old altar with acoustics that echo like a conch shell. Across the city center stands Istiqlal Mosque, the largest in Southeast Asia and sixth largest in the world by capacity—a symbol of religious tolerance positioned almost opposite the Cathedral. On Fridays when the mosque closes, you view it from outside.
