The Experience
The 132-meter National Monument dominates Merdeka Square at the heart of Jakarta, its gold-leaf flame symbolizing Indonesian independence. The basement holds 48 dioramas tracing Indonesia's history from prehistoric times to the present, and the guide walks you through the square's government buildings and the monument's significance before moving on. If the monument is closed on Monday, you'll see the exterior and the surrounding plaza instead.
The Cathedral, built in gothic style in 1891, sits on Jalan Lapangan Banteng Utara with a high tower and stained-glass windows; inside are three altars arranged in a semi-circle and an old altar with acoustics that echo like a conch shell. Across the city center stands Istiqlal Mosque, the largest in Southeast Asia and sixth largest in the world by capacity—a symbol of religious tolerance positioned almost opposite the Cathedral. On Fridays when the mosque closes, you view it from outside. Between these two sites, you meet puppet masters at a wayang workshop, learning how Indonesian shadow puppets are made and played, and seeing collections from different regions.
Old Town Batavia, the former center of Dutch colonial rule, preserves the architecture and layout of Amsterdam—former governor's offices, banks, hospitals and courthouses now serve as museums. The tour ends at Sunda Kelapa, Jakarta's old harbor at the head of Batavia, where you pass the 17th-century drawbridge that Portuguese and Dutch traders used when they first arrived. The driver handles parking and highway fees, and you return to your hotel or the airport with bottled water provided throughout.
