The experience

The tour starts at Sunda Kelapa, Jakarta's oldest harbour, where you'll see traditional Indonesian phinisi boats still working the domestic cargo routes. From there the route moves into Kota Tua (Old Town), where you walk along the canal past Dutch colonial buildings, the Jakarta sinking monument, and the Fatahillah square with its old city hall. A puppet maker works in this district. You'll watch how the dolls are carved and painted.

Glodok, Jakarta's Chinatown, holds the Dharma Bhakti temple, built in 1650 and the oldest Chinese temple in the city. After the temple you move through the wet market to see how locals shop for vegetables, fish, fruits and groceries: the kind of place tourists rarely navigate alone. The Istiqlal Mosque comes next, Southeast Asia's largest, with capacity for 200,000 people. You'll go inside to see the interior design. The mosque closes Fridays for prayer. Across from it stands the Cathedral, a neo-gothic church built during colonial times that symbolizes Indonesia's religious diversity, though Sunday services may limit interior access.

The National Monument (Monas), Jakarta's 132-meter landmark, is a short photo stop. It closes Mondays for maintenance. The final stop is the school Obama attended as a child from 1969 to 1971. Weekday visits let you go inside and meet current students. Weekends show only the statue of young Obama outside the gates. Your guide speaks English throughout, the vehicle is air-conditioned, and bottled water is provided.
