The experience

Your guide picks you up from your hotel in a private air-conditioned car and takes you through Jakarta's main districts over seven hours. The route connects five distinct neighborhoods, each with its own history: you'll stand in front of the 132-meter National Monument (Monas) in Merdeka Square, which marks Indonesia's independence struggle; walk through Old Town (Kota Tua), where Dutch colonial buildings line a canal system that earned the area the nickname "Little Amsterdam"; and explore the Wayang Museum, housed in a colonial-era building and holding Indonesia's most extensive collection of traditional puppets. Leather shadow puppets, wooden rod puppets, and pieces from across Asia used to tell epic stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata.

The tour also includes the Istiqlal Mosque, Southeast Asia's largest, which can hold over 200,000 people and sits near the old Catholic Cathedral to demonstrate religious harmony in Indonesia. Your final stop is Glodok, Jakarta's Chinatown, where you'll pass through a traditional wet market and watch the local Chinese community at work. A settlement that has occupied this area since the 1500s. Before heading back, you visit Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, a park housing traditional houses from all 33 Indonesian provinces, along with contemporary arts, crafts, regional costumes and musical instruments.

The guide is licensed and speaks English throughout. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, as is the entrance fee to each site. If your date falls on a Monday, Monas will be closed and you'll pass by the gate instead. The Wayang Museum is also closed on Mondays and Indonesian national holidays. Pickup from areas outside central Jakarta can be arranged for an additional fee.

What is the Wayang Museum and what will I see there?

The Wayang Museum is Jakarta's dedicated cultural museum for Indonesian puppetry, housed in a colonial-era building in Old Town. Monas closes every Monday, so you won't be able to enter the tower. On Mondays, the tour passes by the front gate of the monument instead, and you'll still see Merdeka Square and the Presidential Palace from outside.

What does Old Town (Kota Tua) look like, and why is it called Little Amsterdam?
