The Experience

The first thing that happened was we got stuck behind a wedding convoy near Merdeka Square — horns blaring, ribbons everywhere. Our guide, Andri, just grinned and shrugged like this was totally normal for Jakarta traffic. Honestly, it set the mood. The city felt alive before we even reached our first stop at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII). Walking through those traditional houses from every province — some smelled faintly of wood smoke and clove — I realized how little I knew about Indonesia’s mix of cultures. Andri pointed out details I’d have missed: the way each roof shape meant something different, the puppets tucked in corners. It was humid but not unbearable; I remember my shirt sticking a bit as we ducked into the shade.

Monas towered above us when we finally made it to National Monument. There’s something about standing under that gold flame at Monas that makes you feel tiny but also kind of proud for no reason? Andri explained the struggle for independence while kids raced pigeons across the plaza. We didn’t go up — line was too long — but just being there felt enough. Right across was the Katedral Church with its spiky neo-gothic towers and then suddenly you’re facing Istiqlal Mosque, massive and cool inside even with people coming in and out for prayers. The echo when someone whispered “welcome” to us inside still sticks with me.

I didn’t expect to enjoy the Museum of Independence as much as I did — there’s this old typewriter behind glass that looked almost out of place among all the uniforms and faded flags. Lunch came next (finally), and it was proper Indonesian food: spicy rendang, rice wrapped in banana leaf, something sweet I still can’t name. Andri laughed when I tried to say “terima kasih” properly — probably butchered it but he seemed happy enough.

The last stop was a batik shop where everything felt soft and smelled faintly of dye and starch. The lady folding scarves showed me how patterns mean different things depending on where you’re from; she pressed a folded piece into my hand as a gift. My fingers were stained blue for hours after. By then Jakarta’s late afternoon haze had settled over the city and honestly, I could’ve stayed longer just watching people filter in and out of shops or listening to distant calls to prayer mixing with street noise.
