The experience

The day starts at your hotel and moves through Jakarta's major sights in a set sequence. First stop is Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (Indonesia Miniature Park), where traditional houses from 33 Indonesian provinces stand alongside contemporary arts, crafts, regional costumes, puppets and musical instruments: a compressed view of the archipelago's diversity. From there, the tour heads to Merdeka Square and the National Monument (Monas), a 132-meter tower at the city's center that symbolizes the fight for Indonesian independence. The Presidential Palace stands nearby, and the guide will point out the surrounding colonial architecture that shaped Jakarta's early twentieth century.

The route then takes in two major houses of worship standing across from each other: Katedral Church, built in neo-gothic style and consecrated in 1901, and Istiqlal Mosque, the largest in Southeast Asia, with capacity for more than 200,000 people. The guide explains how these two religions coexist peacefully in Indonesia.
