The experience
I’ll admit, I didn’t expect to feel so much just stepping into Dharma Bakti Temple that morning. The air was thick with incense and something sweet, maybe candied ginger? Our guide, Rina, handed me a tiny red candle and showed me how to light it. She told us about the temple’s roots in the 1600s, but honestly, I was distracted by the way sunlight hit the old wood beams. There were families praying quietly. I tried not to stare but it felt like being let in on a secret.
Old Town Batavia was next: cobblestones underfoot and those Dutch-era buildings that look like they’ve seen everything. Rina pointed out where the spice traders used to meet (she joked that if you squint hard enough you can still smell nutmeg). We wandered past street artists sketching tourists and locals on benches sipping iced tea. It wasn’t rushed at all. Then came my favorite part: the Wayang Kulit puppet show at Makutharama Studio.
