The experience
The day starts with a drive along Grenada's west coast toward Gouyave, a fishing town where you'll learn how nutmeg and mace are hand-processed and why they matter to the island's economy. At Diamond Chocolate Factory you taste Jouvay chocolate made from bean to bar on the estate. The Victoria Nutmeg Museum explains why Grenada earned the name Spice Isle: the island's black gold, as locals call it.
Heading north to St. Patrick, you visit Carib's Leap, the historic site where indigenous people made their last stand against the French. A stop at a rum shop lets you sample River's Rum, produced at the 200-year-old water-powered River Antoine Rum Distillery using methods unchanged for over two centuries. Lunch is a three-course meal at Belmont Estates, a working plantation where all produce is grown on-site. The estate also makes organic chocolate and goat cheese.
The route cuts east through Grenville and climbs into the Grand Etang rainforest at 1,900 feet above sea level, where you may spot mona monkeys introduced during the slave trade. The final stop is Annandale Falls, where there's time for a swim before the return to St. George's. An air-conditioned vehicle and professional guide carry you through the full day. Bottled water is provided.
