The Experience
We rolled out from our hotel just after breakfast—our guide, Devon, grinning as he waved us into his van. The streets of St. George’s were already humming, colors everywhere: mangoes stacked high, women calling out prices over heaps of nutmeg and cinnamon. I tried to haggle for a bag of cocoa beans but mostly just made the vendor laugh. The air was thick with spice and something sweet I couldn’t quite place—maybe guava? Devon knew half the people we passed; he kept stopping to chat in that easy Grenadian way. It felt like everyone had time for a story.
The House of Chocolate was next. I’ll admit, I thought it’d be a quick stop—but we ended up staying longer than planned because the owner started telling us about her grandmother’s old recipes. We tasted a piece of dark chocolate that melted slow on my tongue (still thinking about that flavor). There was this old radio playing calypso in the corner—kind of scratchy but warm somehow. After that, Mark’s Sports Bar: walls covered in photos and flags from all over, and Mark himself poured us his “under the counter” spice rum—fiery but smoother than I expected. He winked when I coughed. There’s a little spice garden out back; you can crush leaves between your fingers and try to guess which is which.
Driving up into the hills, everything got quieter except for birds and the occasional goat wandering across the road. Annandale waterfall appeared suddenly through the trees—a rush of water over mossy rock, cool mist on my face as we walked closer. A few locals were there swimming; one kid did a cannonball off a rock and everyone cheered. We grabbed cold drinks at Wild Orchid Bar nearby—lime juice for me—and just sat listening to water and wind for a while.
The last stop was Grand Etang Lake, tucked away in rainforest so green it almost hurt my eyes. We watched Mona monkeys darting through branches (one nearly stole my water bottle). Devon told us stories about old volcanoes and hurricanes while we walked around the crater rim—he makes history sound like gossip somehow. I didn’t want to leave that quiet blue water behind just yet… but eventually we climbed back in the van, shoes muddy and heads full.
