The experience

The drive from Marsa Alam to Luxor takes four hours each way by private car, so you leave early and return late: a full day commitment, but one that fits the distance. Your guide meets you at your hotel and travels with you the entire way, explaining what you're about to see before you arrive. This is not a bus tour where you sit among strangers. It's just you, your guide and the driver in a private vehicle.

In Luxor, you start at Karnak Temple, the largest ancient religious site known anywhere in the world. From there you move to the Colossi of Memnon: two massive stone statues of King Amenhotep III, each rising about 18 meters from the plain, made from quartzite sandstone blocks that were moved 700 kilometers from Cairo. Lunch happens at a local restaurant in Luxor around noon. The centerpiece of the day is Valley of the Kings, the burial place of Egypt's most powerful rulers from the 18th to the 20th dynasty. The tombs here (including those of Ramses II and Tutankhamun) still hold much of their original decoration. If you want to enter Tutankhamun's tomb specifically, that costs an extra 200 Egyptian pounds.

Bottled water is provided throughout the day. The tour is wheelchair accessible, though the terrain at the archaeological sites involves walking on uneven ground. Children from age one are welcome. Your guide's commentary is available in English, French, Arabic or Dutch, so the experience works whether you speak one of those languages or need translation.
