The experience
The day starts with pickup from your Marsa Alam hotel and a drive to Luxor's West Bank. Your guide leads you into the Valley of the Kings, where you enter three royal tombs built into the rock during the 18th Dynasty: burial chambers of pharaohs whose names and images still cover the walls. The scale and precision of the architecture, carved deep underground, is what made this valley the necropolis of choice for Egypt's most powerful rulers.
From there you move to the Temple of Hatshepsut, the memorial built by Egypt's only female pharaoh, who ruled for roughly 20 years around 1490 to 1469 B.C. The temple rises in three terraced levels against a cliff face, its design unlike any other temple in Egypt. You'll also stand before the Colossi of Memnon, two 50-foot seated statues of King Amenhotep III's father, carved from single blocks of stone and named by Roman travelers centuries later. Lunch is served during the day, and you'll have bottled water available throughout.
The tour ends at Karnak Temple, the largest temple complex in Egypt. Your guide will walk you through its courts, pylons and sanctuaries before returning you to your hotel. The full day (15 to 17 hours from pickup to drop-off) covers ground that would take multiple days to arrange independently, and the Egyptologist guide contextualizes what you're seeing rather than simply pointing out the sites.
What’s included
