The Experience

We’d barely left Marsa Alam when our driver handed us cold water and grinned, “Long road, but worth it.” He wasn’t wrong. The drive to Luxor felt like crossing into another world — desert rolling by, sun just starting to heat up. When we finally met Ahmed, our Egyptologist guide, he greeted us with this easy warmth and immediately started telling stories about pharaohs that made even my half-asleep brain perk up. I didn’t expect to laugh so much before 9am.

The Valley of the Kings was quieter than I imagined — not silent, but there’s this hush in the air. Inside one tomb, the colors on the walls were so sharp it almost felt rude to breathe too hard. Ahmed pointed out tiny carvings I’d have missed (“See that? That’s a spell for safe passage”). I tried repeating one of the names; he smiled and said I was close — generous. The air smelled faintly dusty-sweet, like old paper and something else I couldn’t name.

Lunch came just when we needed it — a simple place with grilled chicken and rice, nothing fancy but honestly perfect after hours in the sun. Someone at another table was celebrating something; there was laughter and clapping, which made me forget how tired my feet were. Floating on a felucca after that… well, I could’ve stayed there forever. The river was calm, breeze cool against my face, and for a minute everything felt slow in a good way.

Karnak Temple hit me hardest — those columns are massive up close. Ahmed showed us where ancient workers carved their marks low on the stone (I still think about that detail).
