The experience

The Troodos Mountains sit at the green heart of Cyprus, and this tour moves through them by private vehicle, stopping at sites that show why the range matters geologically and culturally. You start at the Cyprus Railways Museum in Evrychou, a restored station building 50 kilometers outside Nicosia, then move into the mountains proper. The route takes in Old Kakopetria, classified as an ancient monument, and Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, the only surviving church of an 11th-century Byzantine monastery on the island.

The day splits around a waterfall choice: Caledonia Waterfalls, a 3-kilometer moderately steep walk, or Millomeris Waterfall, a 400-meter mostly flat path. After the walk, you stop in Platres Village for lunch, one of the oldest mountain settlements in Cyprus. The Troodos range is geologically rare (one of the few places on earth where oceanic crust is exposed without diving), and the tour notes this as you move through the landscape.

The final stop is Ktima Gerolemo winery, set at 900 meters altitude in the wine-producing area north of Omodos. A guide walks you through the family operation, explains organic vine cultivation, and leads a tasting session with snacks while you look out over the valley and vineyards. Omodos itself is famous for wine, Zivania spirit, handmade lace and traditional bread, and the village's quiet character rounds out the day before the return drive.
