itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Gabala and Shamakhi full-day tour

  • Start at Gosha Gala Tower or hotel pickup
  • Visit Juma Mosque in Shamakhi
  • Stop for optional lunch at local restaurant
  • Visit Nohur Lake and enjoy nature
  • Optional horse riding and boat trip at lake
  • Explore Tufandag Mountain Resort
  • Optional cable car ride and roller coaster
  • Return to starting point or hotel drop-off

I’ll admit, I didn’t expect to feel so small standing outside the Juma Mosque in Shamakhi. Our guide, Farid, just sort of paused before we went in—like he wanted us to notice how the morning light hit the stone. It’s old, like really old (he said 8th century), but there were kids running around outside and an old man selling pomegranates nearby. The smell of fresh bread from somewhere—I never figured out where—kept drifting over. We’d left Baku early, still half asleep, but that woke me up fast.

The drive toward Gabala kind of blurred by—lots of green hills and little roadside stands selling honey in recycled bottles. Lunch was at this local spot on the way (not included in the tour price), where I tried something called qutab for the first time. Farid laughed when I tried to pronounce it; I’m sure I butchered it. The tea came in those tiny glasses that burn your fingers if you’re not careful. After that, we stopped at Nohur Lake. There was this weird hush when we got out—the air felt cooler and you could hear birds instead of traffic for once. Some people did a boat ride but I just sat by the water, watching a couple of fishermen argue quietly in Azerbaijani.

Tufandag Mountain Resort was next—sort of a surprise because it’s both fancy and laid-back at the same time. You can take a cable car up (extra fee) or just hang around below with coffee and watch everyone else try to act brave about heights. A few in our group did the mountain roller coaster; I chickened out but cheered them on anyway. The mountains are right there—huge and close—and for a minute it felt like we were much further from Baku than we really were.

We got back late, headlights bouncing off sheep on the road sometimes. It was one of those days that leaves you tired but kind of lighter inside—I still think about how quiet Nohur Lake felt compared to Baku’s rush.
