The Experience
We were already halfway out of Baku before I realized how different the air felt — cooler, sharper, almost like it had a taste. Our guide (Rashad, who somehow knew every shortcut) kept pointing out little villages tucked into the hills as we drove toward Shamakhi. The Juma Mosque was our first stop; I’d seen photos but standing there in the quiet, with my shoes off on the cool marble, it just felt… heavier somehow. There was this faint smell of incense and old stone. Rashad told us a story about the mosque surviving earthquakes — he said it so casually I almost missed it.
After that, we hit the road again for Ismailli. The suspension bridge looked harmless from a distance but started wobbling as soon as I stepped on. Someone behind me laughed (maybe at my face?) and honestly, my heart was pounding so hard I barely noticed the view until halfway across — mountains rolled out forever and there was this wild wind that made everything feel alive. The river below looked tiny from up there. If you’re scared of heights, maybe don’t look down… or do, just for the story.
The waterfall climb in Gabala is steeper than I expected — those stairs are no joke. We stopped at one of the platforms to catch our breath (and maybe pretend we were admiring the view instead). Water spray everywhere, cool on my skin even though my legs were burning a bit. Some people went all the way up but honestly I was happy where I was; sometimes you don’t need to reach the top to feel it.
Last stop: Tufandag ski resort cable car. The ride up felt like floating — silence except for cables humming and someone eating chips behind me (don’t ask). From up there you see everything: forests fading into clouds, little dots of houses far below. Lunch came with hot tea and stories from Rashad about winter here — apparently it gets packed with skiers but today it was just us and a few locals waving from below. It’s weird what sticks with you; I still think about that feeling when we stepped off the cable car into all that open sky.
