Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Shamakhi and Lahij Village

  • Visit Juma Mosque in Shamakhi
  • See Yeddi Gumbaz Mausoleum
  • Explore Diri Baba mausoleum
  • Travel through forests and serpentine roads
  • Stop at Zernava suspension bridge
  • Discover Lahij village and crafts

The experience

Ten to eleven hours takes you through two distinct chapters of Azerbaijan's history. The first half centers on Shamakhi, where you enter Juma Mosque (one of the few in the region open to non-Muslims) walking barefoot across thick carpets after removing your shoes. Women receive a free head covering at the entrance. From there you move to Yeddi Gumbaz Mausoleum, the tomb of Shirvan Dynasty rulers, where seven stone domes rise from the ground in a graveyard that carries a deliberate sense of mystery. Diri Baba mausoleum, built into a cliff face with a two-storey structure and carved staircases, shows the architectural mastery of ancient Shirvan craftsmen.

The route then climbs into the Caucasus Mountains along serpentine roads, passing through forests and stopping at the Zernava suspension bridge before arriving at Lahij. The village itself is the draw: two-storey houses line cobbled streets that run along the Girdiman River, and the entire settlement functions as a working craft center. Copper workers here use techniques that earned their pieces a place at the Vienna World Exhibition in 1873, and you'll see hand-hammered copper dishes, bronze work, carved ornaments, woven goods, leather ware and souvenir knives made by artisans who have held these trades for generations. Each quarter of the village has its own mosque, reinforcing the sense that this is a complete, self-contained world.

Your guide speaks English or Russian and handles all logistics: hotel pickup and drop-off are included, as is bottled water throughout the day. Entry fees to the monuments and any meals are separate, so you can plan your spending accordingly.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Russian.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 14 years); Infant (under 4).

What is Juma Mosque in Shamakhi like to visit if I'm not Muslim?

Juma Mosque welcomes non-Muslim visitors. You remove your shoes at the entrance and walk on thick carpets inside. Women receive a free head covering to wear during the visit and return it when leaving. The mosque is one of the region's few that permits this kind of access.

What can I see and buy in Lahij village?

Lahij is a working craft village where artisans make hand-hammered copper and bronze dishes, carved ornaments, woven and knitted goods, leather ware, and souvenir knives using traditional techniques. The pieces are displayed and sold in workshops throughout the village, and the copper work here was exhibited at the Vienna World Exhibition in 1873.

How do you reach Lahij from Shamakhi?

The route climbs through Caucasus Mountain forests on serpentine roads, passing through a natural canyon and stopping at the Zernava suspension bridge before arriving at the village. The drive itself is part of the experience, showing the geography that has isolated and preserved Lahij's craft traditions.

Will I have time to walk around Lahij and the villages, or is it mostly driving?

The itinerary includes stops at each site (Juma Mosque, both mausoleums, and the village itself), so you have time to walk the cobbled streets of Lahij and see the craftspeople at work. The ten to eleven hours covers the full route with these pauses built in.
