The Experience

You start at Fountains Square, the downtown entertainment hub that emerged as Baku's main trading street during the oil boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. From there, the guide drives you to the Double Gates to begin a walking tour of Baku Old City, which takes around 1 to 2 hours on foot. You'll see the Chain, Sailor and Cat Houses, the Bukhara and Multani Caravanserais, the Juma Mosque and the Maiden Tower while the guide explains the neighborhood's layered history. After photos at the tower, you can visit the Miniature Book Museum if it's open — it holds over 5,600 books from 66 countries, including volumes so small they measure just millimeters thick.

Next comes the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, the former residence of Shirvan's rulers and the architectural centerpiece of Baku's Old City. The complex includes the Divan-Khan courtyard, a 1441 mosque, a bathhouse and the mausoleum of court scholar Seyid Yahya Bakuvi. You'll walk the grounds and absorb the scale of the place. The guide then takes you to Little Venice, a charming section of the Seaside National Park designed to echo the Italian city, before moving on to the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum on the seafront. The museum displays the world's largest collection of Azerbaijani carpets and rugs, organized by weaving technique and period.

From the museum, you climb to Highland Park, the highest point in the city and the best vantage for a panoramic view of Baku, the bay and the Seaside National Park stretching along the water. The park was built into Baku's architectural master plan decades ago specifically for this view. Finally, you arrive at the Heydar Aliyev Center, the futuristic landmark with flowing curves that has become the symbol of modern Baku. You walk around the exterior, explore the exhibitions inside and see how the building's design stands apart from everything else in the city. The tour ends back at Fountains Square.
