The experience
If you have a full day free from Baku and want to see the north side of Azerbaijan without arranging your own transport, this tour handles the driving and the route. You start with hotel pickup and head toward Khinalig Village, stopping inside Qecresh forest on the way: a chance to see local people and photograph the landscape before the real climb begins. The forest sits on the route itself, so you don't backtrack. It's a natural pause before the higher altitude kicks in.
Guba city is the first major stop, one of the oldest in Azerbaijan. You visit the carpet weaving factory to watch the craft that has defined the region, then the mosques that anchor the town's history. The landscape here is what the operator emphasizes: special and diverse, with fresh mountain air and a climate that feels distinct from Baku. After Guba, the route heads uphill to Khinalig Village, sitting at the highest point in the region. The village has survived over 5,000 years of invasions because of its remote altitude and mountain position. You walk through streets that have held the same families and trades for centuries. The guide can tell you what you're standing in front of, but the age of the place is visible in the stone and the layout itself.
On the return to Guba, you stop at Mastargah Waterfall: small, but with a restaurant nearby if you want tea or a meal (not included in the tour price). The final stop is the Guba Genocide Memorial Complex, a burial site and memorial to victims of the 1918 massacre. The route ends with the drive back to your hotel. The whole day runs 10 to 11 hours door-to-door. You choose your guide's language (English or Russian) at checkout.

What is Khinalig Village and why is it worth the drive?
Khinalig is the highest village in Azerbaijan and one of the most ancient continuously inhabited places in the world, with a documented history spanning over 5,000 years. It survived countless invasions because of its remote mountain location and altitude. You walk through the village itself and see how the settlement has maintained its character across millennia.
How high do we go and what should I know about the altitude?
Khinalig sits at high altitude in the mountains of Guba Region. The operator notes the tour requires endurance of high altitude, unexpected weather and uphill roads.
