The Experience

The drive out from Baku started early—our guide, Rashad, texted the night before to confirm pickup (he even double-checked if I wanted coffee first). Heading north, the city faded fast and the landscape got greener than I expected. Our first stop was Shamakhi. I’d read about the Juma Mosque but seeing it up close—those old stones and the way light slants through the arches—felt heavier than photos ever show. Rashad explained some of its history (I caught maybe half; my brain was still waking up), but just standing there with local families coming in and out made it feel alive, not just old.

Lunch in Gabala was at this place where you could smell grilled lamb before you even sat down. The bread came out warm enough to burn your fingers a little—I still think about that bread. Afterward, we walked around Nohur Lake. The water reflected these blue-green mountains so perfectly it almost looked fake (but then a duck ruined it, which made me laugh). Some people rented boats or catamarans but I just liked sitting for a second with my tea and watching local kids skip stones.

Tufandag Mountain Resort was next—a cable car up into chilly air where everything felt sharper and quieter. You could see all of Gabala laid out below. In winter they ski here but today it was just wind and sunlight on stone. The last part was honestly my favorite: we switched from our comfy minivan to this rattly old Soviet Lada for the bumpy road to 7 Beauties Waterfall. It smelled like pine needles and engine oil inside, and our driver played some Azerbaijani pop music that got stuck in my head for days after. The falls themselves are tucked away—lots of steps, slippery rocks, cold spray on your face. Worth it though.

I didn’t expect to end the day feeling both tired and weirdly peaceful. There’s something about watching dusk settle over those mountains that sticks with you longer than you think it will.
