You’ll sip coffee with locals near 5 Finger Mountain, walk among surreal pink-and-purple hills at Khizi’s Candy Cane Mountains, share a hearty lunch in Quba, then breathe crisp air at Shahdag Mountain Resort—skiing or strolling as snow falls softly around you. This day leaves its mark in small moments as much as grand views.
We were already halfway through our first coffee when the bus hissed to a stop at the 5 Finger Mountain rest area. The air was sharp—kind of wakes you up better than caffeine. Some folks stretched their legs, others drifted toward the little market stalls. Our guide, Aysel, waved us over to try something sweet (I still don’t know what it was called—she said it fast and laughed when I tried to repeat it). It smelled like honey and walnuts. That’s how our day trip to Shahdag from Baku started: not with big sights, but small things that stick with you.
The drive out toward Khizi felt like flipping pages in a picture book—suddenly those wild stripes of the Candy Cane Mountains appeared. I’d seen photos online but didn’t expect the colors to be so… well, weirdly beautiful? Pinks and purples swirling right through the rock. We only had about half an hour there but I kept staring at my shoes crunching over gravel that looked painted by kids. Someone asked if it was real or just a filter—nope, it’s all nature doing its thing.
Lunch in Quba came next—a proper sit-down meal, not just snacks. The kebabs were smoky and soft (the lamb especially), and there was this salad called choban that tasted fresh even in winter. Our guide told stories about growing up nearby; she pointed out how people in Quba always greet each other with a nod or a hand over the heart. I noticed that too—little things you’d miss if you weren’t looking.
And then Shahdag itself—honestly, I thought I’d just watch others ski, but ended up trying it myself (badly). The snow here is different than what I’m used to back home—lighter somehow? There’s this silence up there between runs that makes you forget about your phone for once. Two hours went by fast; part of me wished we could’ve stayed longer just wandering around watching families play or sipping hot tea outside. So yeah, if you’re thinking about a day trip to Shahdag Mountain Resort from Baku… don’t overthink it.
Your journey covers all entry fees and taxes plus comfortable transport in an air-conditioned vehicle. You’ll have a local guide throughout the day and enjoy a traditional lunch in Quba with kebabs and soft drinks before heading back home after time spent exploring Shahdag Mountain Resort.
