Black marble graves and sea views tour, narrow bazaar streets, rolled-up carpet museum, tea with a local expert

A four-hour guided city tour of Baku starting with hotel pickup, covering the UNESCO Old City (Icherisheher), Baku Boulevard, Martyrs' Lane, and Nizami Street with an English-speaking local guide named Ell. The guide brings 16 years of Baku life and rural Azerbaijani roots into the route, stopping to taste traditional tea and sweets and explaining the stories behind landmarks instead of rushing through them. Children from age 3 are welcome; the tour suits all fitness levels.

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Baku's historic and modern sites

  • Visit Martyrs’ Lane memorial
  • Walk through Highland Park
  • Stroll along Baku Boulevard
  • Shop and walk on Nizami Street
  • Explore the Old City (Icherisheher)

The Experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel in a van or sedan, depending on group size. Ell meets you and heads first to Martyrs' Lane, a hilltop memorial with rows of black marble graves, the Eternal Flame, and views across Baku and the Caspian Sea. The site honors those who died during Black January in 1990 and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict—a place of quiet reflection before the rest of the city opens up. From there, you walk through Highland Park's tree-lined terraces, still looking out over the Flame Towers and the bay.

The Boulevard comes next: a promenade along the water where you'll pass the Carpet Museum (shaped like a rolled-up carpet, optional entry 6 USD per person), Little Venice with its canals and gondola rides (optional boat ride 3 USD per person), and Deniz Mall. It's the city's main gathering place, and Ell stops to point out how the waterfront has changed and what locals actually do there. Bottled water is provided as you walk.

Then into the Old City—Icherisheher, a UNESCO site ringed by ancient fortress walls. Narrow streets open onto the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs (each 9 USD to enter, optional). You'll pass traditional caravanserais, mosques, hammams, and craft shops, and this is where Ell stops for tea and sweets, sitting down to talk instead of narrating from a distance. Nizami Street, the main pedestrian shopping avenue with 19th and 20th century architecture, closes the route before the return to your hotel.

Does the guide speak English the whole time?

Yes, Ell is a professional English-speaking guide and conducts the entire tour in English. He's multilingual and has lived in Baku for 16 years, so he can answer questions about the city in depth.

What is Martyrs' Lane and why do we visit it?

Martyrs' Lane is a solemn hilltop memorial honoring those who died during Black January in 1990 and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. It features rows of black marble graves, the Eternal Flame monument, and Turkish and British memorials, and offers one of the best panoramic views of Baku and the Caspian Sea, making it both a place of remembrance and a vantage point for understanding the city's geography.

Can I bring my young child on this tour?

Yes, children are welcome from age 3. Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller, and infants are required to sit on an adult's lap during any van travel. Specialized infant seats are available if needed.

How much walking is involved, and is it suitable for someone with limited mobility?

The tour is four hours and involves walking through the Old City's narrow streets, along the Boulevard, and up to Martyrs' Lane on a hilltop.
