The Experience

The tour starts at Nizami Park and climbs to Highland Park first, where you stand above the entire city: the Caspian Sea stretches out, the Flame Towers catch the light, and the Alley of Martyrs holds a solemn memorial to Azerbaijan's independence struggle. From there, the Baku Funicular carries you down the hillside—a ride that is itself a landmark, offering views of the waterfront as you descend. The funicular is not included in the tour price, but it is the scenic route between the two halves of your day.

Baku Boulevard runs along the water for miles, and your guide walks you through the gardens and past the cafes where locals gather. The Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum sits here too—a UNESCO-recognized collection of traditional carpets dating back centuries, with entrance fees separate if you want to step inside. The Philharmonic Fountain and Seadet Sarayi (Palace of Happiness), a Neo-Gothic mansion built by an oil baron for his wife, anchor this stretch of the promenade. You'll also pass Azneft Square and the Ismailiyya Palace, both built in the early 20th century when Baku's oil wealth was reshaping the city's architecture.

The Old City (Icherisheher) is where the day deepens. These are narrow cobblestone streets inside medieval walls, and your guide moves through them with the knowledge of someone who knows which alley leads to the Maiden Tower, which doorway opens onto the Palace of the Shirvanshahs. The Maiden Tower stands 28 meters tall, dating to the 12th century, its purpose still debated—watchtower, fire beacon, or observatory. The Palace of the Shirvanshahs is a 13th–15th-century complex of royal residences, mosques, and a bathhouse, all carved stone and centuries of craft. You'll see the Juma Mosque (12th century), the Gosha Gala Tower (12th century, a double tower connected by a single wall), and the Baku Museum of Miniature Books—a collection of over 6,500 tiny volumes from more than 60 countries, some no larger than a few millimeters. The Agha Mikayil Bath House and the Yeraltı Hamam (Underground Bath, 15th century) show how bathing culture shaped daily life here. You'll also pass the Nizami Museum of Literature from the outside, its striking facade a tribute to one of Azerbaijan's greatest poets.

The tour ends back at Nizami Park, where the statue of Nizami Ganjavi stands among landscaped paths. Four to five hours on foot means a moderate pace with stops for photos and the guide's stories, but the walking is steady and the terrain uneven in places—cobblestones in the Old City, some elevation change at Highland Park. Your guide speaks English or Turkish and is certified to lead groups. Children from age 13 are welcome.
