The Experience

You meet your guide in the Old City and walk through the medieval core of Baku. The guide starts at the Maiden Tower, the landmark that defines the skyline, and tells the history, facts and legends attached to it — you don't enter the tower itself, but you see it from outside and hear why it matters. From there you move to the Shirvanshah Palace, built in the 12th century, and learn the story of the Shirvanshah states and what the palace meant in its time. The guide explains how these two sites anchor the city's identity.

As you move deeper into the Old City, the tour opens up to smaller, less obvious places. You pass the Aga Mikayil Bath, the only functioning hamam left in the Old City and a medieval structure still in use. You visit the Miniature Book Museum, a private collection where the oldest book dates to the 17th century and the smallest one is smaller still — the guide shows you what "miniature" actually means. You see the mosque that was shuttered during Soviet times and later held the world's first carpet museum. At the Bukhara Caravanserai, the guide explains what traders on the Silk Road brought to and took from Azerbaijan.
