The Experience

I woke up still half-dreaming about the strange shapes we’d seen scratched into stone at Gobustan—6,000 petroglyphs, our guide Rashad said, some older than the pyramids. He pointed out a figure dancing (he called it “Yalli”—I probably pronounced it wrong), and I swear you could almost hear ancient music in the wind. The rocks felt cool under my hand, gritty with dust. There was this dry smell—sun-baked earth and something a little metallic. I didn’t expect to feel so small standing there, but you do.

Getting to the mud volcanoes was its own adventure—Rashad flagged down an old Soviet Lada for us because the regular van would’ve sunk in the mud. We bounced along, laughing every time someone’s head hit the roof. The volcanoes themselves looked like bubbling grey pancakes; one of them spat out a little glop right as I leaned too close (my shoes will never be the same). The air smelled faintly of sulfur but not as bad as I’d feared. It was quiet except for the occasional plop and distant birds.

Lunch was in a roadside place where nobody rushed us—flatbread still warm from the oven, smoky kebab, tea poured from way up high so it frothed. After that we drove to Ateshgah Fire Temple, where flames flickered behind old stone arches. Rashad explained how Zoroastrians came here centuries ago to worship fire that just seeps out of the ground. It’s odd seeing something so ancient right next to a modern city like Baku—you get this sense of layers everywhere.

The last stop was Yanar Dag—the “burning mountain.” At first it just looked like any other hill until you got close enough to feel real heat on your face. The fire runs along a crack in the earth and just keeps burning—no wires or tricks. Some kids were roasting marshmallows nearby (not sure if that’s allowed), and an old man nodded at us without saying anything. On the way back, we stopped briefly at Bibi-Heybat Mosque—the green tiles glowed under late sun, people coming and going quietly for prayer.
