The experience
The tour starts at your hotel in Baku and moves through four distinct sites across the Absheron peninsula. Gobustan National Park opens with a modern museum that frames the landscape's significance: the site holds one of the world's largest concentrations of Paleolithic rock art, with carvings left by Cro-Magnon settlements preserved since ancient times. From there, a dirt road leads to the mud volcanoes themselves: active craters formed from blue clay that create a lunar-like terrain. The geological feature that defines the region is the presence of natural gas seeping through the earth, which locals have observed for millennia.
The Ateshgah Fire Temple in Surakhany Village stands where the largest concentration of these natural flames once burned. Built in the first century BC by Hindu Brahmanites and Persian Zoroastrians who traveled the Silk Road, the temple sits beside a caravanserai that once housed traveling merchants. The guide walks you through the temple's installations and explains the beliefs and daily life of the fire-worshipping hermits and the merchants who stayed nearby. Yanar Dag, the final stop, is the only one of several dozen burning sites on the Absheron peninsula still active today. The mountain's peak holds an observation deck that overlooks a third of the peninsula.
The tour runs eight hours with round-trip hotel pickup included. Your guide speaks English, Hindi, Russian, or Hebrew depending on your choice at booking. Lunch and all entry fees are included. You'll travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with bottled water provided throughout the day.

Is Yanar Dag's fire something you see from a distance, or do you get close to it?
Yanar Dag has an observation deck at the mountain's top where you stand and watch the natural flames burning from the ground. The fire has burned continuously for many centuries and is visible from this vantage point, which also overlooks a third of the Absheron peninsula.
What was the Ateshgah Fire Temple used for, and who built it?
The Ateshgah Fire Temple was founded in the first century BC by Hindu Brahmanites and Persian Zoroastrians who came to the Absheron peninsula because natural flames burst from the ground there. The temple stood beside a caravanserai, an inn for merchants traveling the Silk Road, and the site illustrates the beliefs and daily life of both the fire-worshipping hermits and the merchants who stayed nearby.
