The experience
The day opens at Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape, a semi-desert plateau covering 537 hectares where more than 6,000 rock engravings span 40,000 years of human art. The site spreads across five hills (Kichik Dash, Boyuk Dash, Jinghirdag-Yazily tepe, Shongardag and Shikhgaya) each one holding evidence of how people lived in the Paleolithic era. Your guide walks you through what these carvings reveal about Azerbaijan's ancient history and their connection to Upper Paleolithic rock art found across Western Europe.
From there, the tour moves to the Absheron Peninsula, where over 350 mud volcanoes exist: more than anywhere else on earth. Azerbaijan is considered the homeland of mud volcanism, and you'll see active, extinct and oil-producing varieties across the landscape. Next comes Bibi-Heybat Mosque, built in classical oriental style with white marble, a glass dome and a Qur'anic verse in glass mosaic. It holds 3,000 people at capacity. Then you reach Yanar Dag, Fire Mountain, where a ten-meter wall of fire burns continuously along the hillside, fed by natural gas rising from below. The volcano has burned for hundreds of years and was used as a Zoroastrian temple before the 7th century.
Ateshgah Fire Temple in the Suraxani district is one of only three Mecusi temples in the world: the others stand in Iran and India. The four-storey structure surrounds a courtyard where flames burn in the dome, and the temple holds 12 cells where visitors report strange acoustic effects. Your final stop is the Heydar Aliyev Center park for photos. The outdoor exhibitions and the "I Love Baku" art installation give you a chance to rest before the drive back to your hotel. Hotel pickup and drop-off, the guide and driver are included. Entrance fees to Ateshgah, Yanar Dag and the Gobustan National Museum are paid separately.
