The experience
Eight to nine hours means roughly three hours of driving and six hours at the sites themselves. The tour starts with pickup from your Baku hotel and heads to Gobustan, where the mud volcano complex holds over 300 formations: the largest concentration in the world. You walk among the bubbling pools to see the geological activity up close, then move to the ancient petroglyphs carved into the rock face, prehistoric records of the civilizations that lived in the region thousands of years ago.
From Gobustan, the route takes you to the Bibi-Heybat Mosque, a 13th-century structure rebuilt in the 1990s after the Bolsheviks destroyed the original in 1936. It houses the tomb of Ukeyma Khanum, a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, and stands as one of Azerbaijan's major Islamic monuments. The driver will explain the history while you're there, then continue to Ateshgah Fire Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site built around a natural gas vent that ignites into flames. The temple served Hindu, Sikh, and Zoroastrian worshippers over centuries, and the architecture reflects that layered spiritual history.
The final stop is Yanardagh in Digah village, where natural gas has been burning for centuries. The flames are smaller now because of gas extraction in the Absheron Peninsula, but the site remains authentic and striking. There's a nearby café where you can sit with a view of the fire and take a break before the drive back to Baku. The air-conditioned vehicle, fuel, parking, and driver are all included. Admission fees to Ateshgah and Yanardagh are separate, as is lunch or dinner if you want to eat during the day.
What’s included

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
In Spanish and Italian, with 5 departure times. In English, Russian, Turkish and Arabic, at 09:00, 10:00, 11:00 and 12:00.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What are the mud volcanoes at Gobustan, and why are there so many there?
Mud volcanoes form when natural gases and mud erupt from the earth's surface, creating geological formations completely different from lava volcanoes. Azerbaijan has over 400 of them, with the majority concentrated in and around the Absheron Peninsula near Baku. Gobustan holds one of the world's largest complexes, with more than 300 formations in one area.
Can I see the rock carvings at Gobustan, and how old are they?
Yes, the petroglyphs are part of the Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO site. These prehistoric rock carvings offer a direct view into the lives and beliefs of ancient civilizations that inhabited the region thousands of years ago, carved into the stone faces where the mud volcanoes sit.
What makes the Ateshgah Fire Temple special?
Ateshgah is built around a natural gas vent that ignites into flames, creating a fire that has burned continuously. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site with architecture reflecting its use as a Hindu, Sikh, and Zoroastrian temple over many centuries, making it a rare example of shared spiritual heritage in one structure.
Is the fire at Yanardagh still burning after all these centuries?
Yes, the natural gas fire at Yanardagh in Digah village has been burning for many centuries and still burns today. The flames are smaller than they once were because of gas extraction in the region, but the site remains active and authentic, with a café nearby where you can watch the fire during a break.
How much driving is included in the eight to nine hour tour?
About three hours of the total duration is transportation between Baku and the three sites. The remaining six hours are spent at Gobustan, the Bibi-Heybat Mosque, Ateshgah Fire Temple, and Yanardagh, with time for walking, viewing, and a café break at the fire site.
