The Experience
Ever wondered what it feels like to drive out of Baku and watch the city blur into open steppe, then suddenly—these wild, striped hills just appear? Our guide Elvin kept calling them the “Candy Cane Mountains” (I thought he was joking at first), but honestly, that’s exactly what they look like—bands of red and white curling across the slopes. The air smelled sharp, almost metallic, when we stepped out for photos. I tried to touch the stone and it left a rusty stain on my fingers. Elvin explained something about iron in the earth and how Mark Elliott named them in his book—felt oddly proud to stand where travel writers had wandered before.
We stopped at Besh Barmag Mountain next—locals tie these fluttering ribbons near a shrine for luck. There was this old woman who smiled at us without saying a word; she handed me a strip of fabric and gestured up. I tied it on (probably upside down), but she just laughed softly and nodded anyway. The Caspian Sea shimmered behind us, all pale blue and wind. After that, we drove through Qechresh forest—windows down, cool air full of plant smells I couldn’t name—and then those steep canyons started winding up toward Khinaliq village.
The road gets rough here; you bounce around as clouds drift so low you could almost grab them. Eagles circled overhead (Elvin pointed out three at once), and sometimes we’d pass wild horses standing by stony rivers. I didn’t expect Khinaliq to feel so…old? Houses stacked on each other, kids waving from rooftops, everything built from stone the same color as the mountain itself. Our lunch was inside a family’s house-museum—a table set with fresh bread still warm from the oven, stews with herbs I couldn’t pronounce (and probably mispronounced when I tried). Someone’s grandmother poured tea; her hands shook but her smile was steady.
I still think about that meal—the way everyone squeezed around one table while rain tapped on the window outside. There’s something about eating food cooked right there in Khinaliq that makes you feel like you’re not just passing through. We drove back to Baku tired but kind of peaceful, you know? Not everything needs an explanation.
