Austrian Cooking Class in Vienna: Make Schnitzel & Strudel
Cook your grandmother's recipes in a Vienna apartment
This 3-hour cooking class in Austria teaches you to make traditional schnitzel, apple strudel and potato soup from family recipes passed down through generations. You cook most of the dishes yourself in a home kitchen, then sit down to eat what you've made. Groups run 2 to 12 people, the guide speaks English and German, and vegetarian, lactose-free and gluten-free versions are available.
The Experience
The class starts with a short talk about Austrian cuisine, then moves straight into the kitchen. You'll work through a 2- or 3-course menu depending on how many people are in the group: your grandmother's Old Viennese potato soup, chicken schnitzel with potato salad and cucumber salad (served with lingonberry jam and lemon), and freshly baked apple strudel with whipped cream. The guide emphasizes hands-on work—you do as much of the cooking as possible yourself, which is the whole point. That way you leave knowing how to make these dishes at home, not just having watched someone else make them.
The kitchen is in a Vienna apartment where the guide's great-grandparents lived, so you're cooking in a real home, not a commercial kitchen. All the equipment you need is there. After everything is cooked, you sit down together and eat the meal you've made. The class runs 3 hours total. If you need vegetarian, lactose-free or gluten-free versions, you can arrange that when you book—though gluten-free strudel isn't possible because of how the pastry works. Vegan isn't an option either. Kids and families are welcome, and if you're bringing a stroller, you can leave it inside the apartment, though you will need to carry it up the stairs since there's no elevator.

Is this one for you?The 3-hour time slot means you can fit this into a morning or afternoon without losing the rest of your day, and the hands-on format—where you do most of the cooking yourself—is what makes it possible to actually recreate these dishes in your own kitchen afterward, not just taste them.
