The Experience

The first thing I noticed as we left Ho Chi Minh City was how the city’s noise faded into something softer—just motorbikes giving way to green fields and the odd rooster. Our guide, Minh, cracked open a cold bottle of water and told us to keep our eyes out for the mountain in the distance. I’ll admit, I was half-asleep until that cable car started climbing up Black Virgin Mountain. The air changed up there—cooler, almost sweet—and you could see all the way to Cambodia if you squinted past the haze. Minh pointed out the giant bronze Buddha (he said it’s Asia’s tallest) and there were monks in saffron robes walking quietly nearby. I tried to take a photo but my hands were shaky from excitement or maybe just too much coffee.

We stopped at this wild-looking Cao Dai Temple next—honestly, it looked like someone had let a rainbow loose inside. Dragons everywhere, and that big all-seeing eye staring down from above the door. There was a ceremony going on when we arrived: singing, gongs echoing around those bright columns, people in white robes moving in slow circles. Minh whispered about how they mix Buddhism and Christianity here (and Confucius too), but mostly I just watched an old woman smile at me as she prayed. Lunch after was rice and something with lemongrass—I still dream about that taste sometimes.

The Cu Chi Tunnels were last. You crawl through these narrow spaces underground (I got mud on my jeans, which Minh said means “you did it right”). There’s this old propaganda film they show first; it’s weirdly cheerful considering what happened here during the war. We saw hidden trapdoors and even tasted tapioca root like soldiers used to eat—kind of bland but strangely comforting after all that crawling around. The drive back felt quieter than before; maybe everyone was thinking about what they’d seen or just tired from so many stories packed into one day trip from Ho Chi Minh City. I kept replaying that moment on top of Black Virgin Mountain in my head—something about being above it all for a minute.
