Cu Chi Tunnels and Mekong Delta Tour

  • Explore Cu Chi underground tunnels
  • Embark private boat in Mekong
  • Cruise along Mekong River estuary
  • Visit orchards and bee-keeping farm
  • Taste natural honey and tropical fruit
  • Enjoy traditional southern Vietnamese music
  • Tour coconut candy workshop and taste candy

The experience

Ten hours means you start early and finish late, which is what fits both the tunnel complex and a full Mekong afternoon into one day. The van collects you, crosses the Southern Vietnamese countryside (paddy fields, orchards, fish ponds, small bridges), and arrives at Cu Chi, where the guide walks you through an underground city that once housed up to 10,000 people. The tunnels held living areas, kitchens, storage, weapons factories, field hospitals and command centers, all built 3 to 10 meters below ground. You move through the network itself, not just look at it from above.

After Cu Chi, the van takes you to My Tho on the Mekong. From there you board a private motorized boat, then switch to a hand-paddled sampan to cruise the small creeks and quiet villages. The route passes orchards and bee-keeping farms where you taste natural honey and tropical fruit. You visit Phoenix Island (Con Phung), see a distillery, and stop at a coconut candy workshop to watch the production and taste the candy and coconut pulp. A traditional set menu lunch (BBQ prawn or chicken, pancakes, crispy fried fish) happens at a family farm. Between the boat rides and the stops, a guide who speaks English explains local customs and the delta itself, one of the four giant deltas in the world.

You choose between a small group departure (shared van with other travelers) or a private tour (your own van and guide). Either way, the van is air-conditioned, bottled water comes with you, and all entrance fees, boat rides, landing fees and the meal are covered. The day is long but the stops break it up. You are moving, watching, tasting, not sitting still for hours.

What exactly is inside the Cu Chi Tunnels that I'll see?

Cu Chi Tunnels is an underground city with living areas, kitchens, storage, weapons factories, field hospitals and command centers built 3 to 10 meters below ground. You walk through the tunnel network itself, not observe it from above. The guide explains how people lived, worked and survived in the depths for years.

How long do I spend on the water in the Mekong Delta?

You board a motorized boat first, then switch to a hand-paddled sampan for the creek and village routes. The exact time on water is not fixed, but the boat and sampan rides are the core of the Mekong portion, taking you past orchards, bee farms, Phoenix Island and the distillery before you return to the van.

What's included in the lunch?

A traditional Vietnamese set menu at a family farm includes BBQ prawn or chicken, pancakes and crispy fried fish. The meal is served as part of the tour and is included in the price.

Is the tour the same if I book small group or private?

Both options follow the same itinerary and visit the same sites. Small group means you share the van with other travelers. Private means you have your own van and guide. Either way, the guide speaks English, the van is air-conditioned, and all entrance fees, transport and lunch are covered.

What happens at the coconut candy workshop?

You visit the workshop to watch the production process, then taste the fresh candy and coconut pulp. It is one of several local craft and production sites on the Mekong portion of the day.

Do I need to be fit for this tour?

The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. You walk through the tunnels and move between boat and sampan, but there are no strenuous climbs or long hikes. Infants can sit on an adult's lap. The tour is not recommended for pregnant travelers.
