You’ll crawl through real Cu Chi tunnels outside Ho Chi Minh City, taste local tapioca and hot tea with your group, and hear stories from a guide who knows every corner here. Includes hotel pickup and drop-off so you don’t have to worry about logistics — just bring your curiosity and maybe a change of shirt if you’re claustrophobic.
We were already halfway down the highway out of Ho Chi Minh City before I realized how green everything was getting. Our guide, Hien, kept tossing stories back over her shoulder — about her uncle who used to live in this area, about the old rubber trees flashing past the window. The bus had that faint scent of wet wipes and bottled water, which I guess is just what group tours smell like now. Someone in the back tried to nap but gave up as Hien started describing how the Viet Cong dug these tunnels with their bare hands. It’s hard to picture until you’re standing there, honestly.
The first thing you notice at Cu Chi isn’t the tunnels — it’s how quiet it gets. There were a couple other groups, but mostly just birds and this weirdly sweet smell from cassava cooking somewhere nearby. Hien showed us some of those old booby traps (she called them “souvenirs from the war” with a little half-smile), then handed us pieces of tapioca root and poured tiny cups of hot Vietnamese tea. I burned my tongue a bit because I got impatient. The tunnels themselves? Way smaller than I expected — crawling through one made my knees ache and my shirt stick to my back, but it also made me laugh out loud at myself when I nearly got stuck.
I tried repeating some Vietnamese phrases Hien taught us while we waited for everyone to regroup (Li laughed when I tried to say “thank you” — probably butchered it). On the way back, there was this tired silence on the bus, like everyone was chewing over what they’d seen. It’s strange how something so heavy can feel so ordinary once you’ve touched it. Still think about that cool earth under my hands down there sometimes.
Your day includes hotel pickup from central districts in Ho Chi Minh City, all entry fees at Cu Chi Tunnels, travel insurance coverage throughout the trip, an English-speaking local guide sharing personal stories along the way, traditional tapioca snacks with Vietnamese hot tea served onsite (plus bottled water and crackers), use of wet tissues after crawling through tunnels if you need them, and drop-off back in District 1 when it’s all done.
