The Experience

I didn’t expect to feel the air change underground at Ben Duoc. Our guide, Minh, handed me a flashlight and grinned—“Don’t worry, it’s bigger than you think.” He wasn’t kidding. Crawling through the Cu Chi tunnels, I could smell damp earth and something almost metallic. It’s quiet down there except for our footsteps and Minh’s stories about how people lived here during the war. I tried ducking into one of those tiny rooms—they really did cook underground, using that Hoang Cam stove so smoke wouldn’t give them away. Wild to imagine daily life like that.

By noon, we pulled up outside the Cao Dai Temple just as drums started echoing from inside. The colors are unreal—pastel blues and golds everywhere—and people in white robes moving in slow lines. Minh explained bits of the ceremony while we watched from a balcony (I had to borrow a scarf to cover my knees—note to self: read the dress code next time). There’s this hush when they sing; it gave me goosebumps even though I didn’t understand a word. Lunch after was by this pond full of lotus flowers—food was fresh, nothing fancy but honestly hit the spot after all that walking.

After eating too much rice (again), we headed for Black Virgin Mountain. The cable car up is kind of surreal—you’re floating above mango trees and little shrines tucked into green hillsides. At the top, Ba Pagoda smells like incense and old stone; locals were lighting candles or just sitting quietly on mats. Minh showed us how people pray for luck or health here—he even helped me light some incense (and laughed when I tried copying his gesture). The view from up there sticks with me: hazy fields stretching way out toward Cambodia, clouds rolling in slow.
