The Experience

The tour starts at the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign—the one designed by Betty Willis back in 1959—and then heads south toward the desert. You'll stop at Seven Magic Mountains first, the Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone's massive land installation in Ivanpah Valley that pulls in 325,000 visitors a year. It's one of those things that looks small in photos and then you're standing in front of it and the scale hits different. After that, the drive into Death Valley National Park takes you through landscape that feels less like earth and more like another planet.

Once you're in the park, the guide takes you to Zabriskie Point, where you're looking at erosional ridges made from sediments that dried up five million years ago. Then Furnace Creek Visitor Center, where you eat lunch and can walk through the museum if you want.
