Four Desert Landmarks & Dark-Sky Stargazing in One Evening from Vegas

You get picked up from your Las Vegas hotel and driven to Death Valley National Park, where you visit four major viewpoints — Dante's View, Badwater Basin, Artist's Palette, and Zabriskie Point — timed to catch the sunset. The Experience

Our guide picked us up right on the Strip and didn't waste time — we were heading straight into Death Valley, about two hours out. The drive itself felt like part of the trip, watching the city fade and the desert take over. First stop was the park entrance for that photo everyone takes, then we climbed to Dante's View, 5,476 feet up, where you can actually see the lowest point in North America from the highest vantage point in the park. The scale of it hits different when you're standing there.

Badwater Basin is where things get strange in the best way. You're standing 282 feet below sea level, and there's this wooden sign bolted to the cliff face showing where sea level would be if the ocean reached here. The salt flats stretch out white and cracked in every direction, and the Black Mountains rise up behind them in layers of pink and gold. We stopped at Artist's Palette next — the colors actually shift depending on the angle and the light, which our guide explained has to do with different mineral deposits in the rock. Then Zabriskie Point for the sunset, which is why you really come out here. The badlands glow gold and orange, and the canyons throw long shadows across the formations. It's the kind of light that makes you understand why photographers camp out there.

After sunset, we waited about an hour and a half before the stargazing started. The guide set up in a spot away from the road, and once your eyes adjusted, the Milky Way just appeared — not like a photo, but like something you could almost reach into. We saw Jupiter, Saturn, constellations, the whole thing. The guide pointed out what we were looking at and let us ask questions without rushing. Fair warning: if there's a bright moon or clouds, the stars won't show up the same way, and the guide mentioned that upfront. We got lucky with clear skies. The drive back included a quick stop in Pahrump to stretch, and we were back at the hotel between 10pm and 1am depending on traffic.
