The experience

The day starts at your hotel, where you board a full-size air-conditioned bus with panoramic windows and an onboard bathroom. Your guide is a working stand-up comedian who entertains during the drive and answers questions about the dam and Las Vegas. On the way to Boulder City, you stop at the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign for photos: your guide shows you the best angle so you don't waste time in the usual line. Next is the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Bridge, the bypass that opened in 2010, where you get the single best view of Hoover Dam from above. You'll drive through historic Boulder City to see the Dingbat houses built for dam workers and the old Hoover Dam Hotel before arriving at the dam itself.

At Hoover Dam, you descend 524 feet into Black Canyon to tour the Nevada power plant and see the massive 30-foot-diameter pipe inside one of the four diversion tunnels. Then you walk through the Hoover Dam Visitor Center, which lays out how the dam was built, how it operates, and who gets the water and power. The centerpiece is a fully guided 45-minute walk across the top of the dam: your guide covers the concrete, the intake towers, the outlet works, the electricity system, the construction deaths and wages, earthquakes, and the artwork and WWII history embedded in the structure.
