The Experience

You get picked up at your Las Vegas Strip resort in the morning and driven to Valley of Fire State Park, about 40 miles outside the city. The guide stops at Beehive Rock first, where cross-bedded sandstone formations show the grooves and patterns left by ancient winds and water—a short walk leads to views of the Muddy Mountains. From there you move through the park hitting Atlatl Rock, where petroglyphs carved 2,000 to 4,000 years ago are etched into red stone, then Rainbow Vista, a loop trail through swirling rock formations that shift color as the sun moves. The guide adjusts which stops you hit based on the season (some trails close May through September for heat safety) and how the group is moving.

Lunch happens at Seven Sisters, a scenic spot inside the park where you eat a deli sandwich surrounded by towering sandstone. You also get bottled water and snacks throughout the day to keep you going. Other stops may include Elephant Rock, a formation that actually looks like an elephant and is a favorite for photos, and the Visitor Center, where displays explain the park's geology and history. The whole tour runs about six hours, which means you're back at your resort by early afternoon with the rest of your day open.

The group maxes out at 13 people, so it stays small enough that the guide can move at a pace that works for everyone. You travel in a vehicle sized to the group, and the driver-guide handles all the navigation and park knowledge. Wear comfortable hiking shoes, bring sunscreen and a hat, and bring cash if you want to grab anything at the Visitor Center gift shop.

Top questions

What are the petroglyphs at Atlatl Rock and how old are they?

Atlatl Rock holds petroglyphs carved between 2,000 and 4,000 years ago by early inhabitants of the region, etched into the red sandstone formations throughout the site. They offer a window into the stories and traditions of the people who lived in the area long before modern Las Vegas existed.

Can I do this tour if I'm visiting Las Vegas for just an afternoon?

Yes—the tour runs about six hours total, so if you arrive in the morning or have a free afternoon, you can fit it in and still have time to return to your resort by early evening. Pickup happens at major Strip resorts, so there's no extra travel to a meeting point.

What happens if the Fire Wave trail is closed when I visit?

Fire Wave closes May 15 through October 1 each year for visitor safety during extreme heat. If it's closed during your tour, the guide will adjust the itinerary and take you to other scenic stops in the park instead, such as Elephant Rock or Rainbow Vista, so you still see the park's most striking formations.

Is lunch included, and what if I have dietary restrictions?

Lunch is a deli-style sandwich included in the tour price, along with bottled water and snacks. For specific dietary needs, confirm with the tour operator after booking to see if they can accommodate your request.

How many people are in the group, and will there be a lot of waiting around?

The group stays under 13 guests, keeping it small and personal. The guide moves through stops based on the group's pace and fitness level, so there's no rigid schedule forcing anyone to rush or wait unnecessarily.
