The experience

The Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge appears first: a quick stop where the Colorado River narrows below concrete and steel, and the light hits the water in a way that makes the phone camera feel useless. Then comes breakfast at IHOP somewhere along the drive, coffee and pancakes before the real thing starts. The bus rolls through the Joshua Tree forest (900 years old, the guide will mention) and the landscape shifts from desert scrub to something older, redder, emptier. When you arrive at Grand Canyon West, you get lunch tickets and a shuttle pass, and then the time is yours: 3.5 hours to move at your own pace.

Eagle Point is where most people go first. The Skywalk sits there like a dare: a horseshoe of glass that extends 70 feet past the rim, and when you step onto it, the canyon floor (4,000 feet down) is under your feet, not beside you. The Colorado River threads through the red walls below. There's a Native American Village at Eagle Point too, with recreated dwellings and cultural performances if you want to linger, but most people spend their time on the glass or just standing at the edge, trying to make sense of the scale.
