The experience

The day starts with hotel pickup and a drive through the high desert of Northern Arizona, passing an extinct volcano and caldera before reaching the 900-year-old Joshua Tree Forest. Along the way you stop at Hoover Dam for photos and commentary on the landmark itself and the surrounding landscape. Once at Grand Canyon West, home to the Hualapai Nation, you have around four hours to explore the rim and the viewpoints within it.

Eagle Point is where you look for the "eagle in the rock" formation and walk through Native American dwellings. The iconic glass Skywalk sits here too, though admission costs extra. Guano Point delivers the panoramic stretch of the canyon: rugged cliffs, colorful walls, and the Colorado River threading below like a ribbon. You eat lunch at the rim and can browse handmade Native American crafts in the gift shops. Breakfast snacks, bottled water and a professional guide in English are included throughout.

If you upgrade to the helicopter option, you board an EC-130 aircraft and descend 4,000 feet to the canyon floor for a close view of the Colorado River and the colossal walls rising around it. You spend time exploring and taking photos before flying back to the rim along a scenic route. The helicopter adds an entirely different scale to what you've seen from above. Weight limit is 300 pounds per passenger. Specialized infant seats are available. The tour requires a minimum number of participants. If that threshold is not met, you'll be offered another date or a full refund.
