The experience
The boat leaves Koh Lanta Old Town Pier after your hotel pickup and heads straight to Koh Rok, a pair of islands in the Andaman Sea about two hours offshore. Because you've booked the boat privately, the crew adjusts the day to match what you want: if you want to snorkel at dawn when the light cuts through the water cleanly, that happens. If you'd rather sleep in and start later, they work around it. The twin islands (Koh Rok Nok and Koh Rok Nai) sit in a national marine park, and the reefs around them hold the kind of coral and fish you don't see in the shallower spots closer to shore.
You'll have snorkeling gear on board, and the crew handles the safety briefing and any adjustments you need. The underwater life here includes sea turtles, schools of reef fish in colors that actually match the postcards, and coral formations that have taken decades to grow. Most people do two or three snorkeling sessions across the day, moving between sites or returning to a favorite one if the fish are still there. Between water time, you're either floating near the boat or back on deck.
Lunch is a Thai meal served on the beach. The crew brings it ashore and you eat on the sand with a view of the water. Soft drinks and drinking water come throughout the day. The return to Ko Lanta happens in the late afternoon, with a transfer back to your hotel in Sala Dan, Klong Dao, Long Beach, Klong Nin, Phra Ae, Kantiang or Khlong Chak. The whole day runs about six hours from pickup to drop-off. Note that Koh Rok closes every July and August, so plan around those months.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Thai.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the water and coral actually like at Koh Rok compared to the snorkeling spots near Ko Lanta?
Koh Rok's reefs are deeper and more complex than the shallow inshore reefs, with larger coral formations and more open-water fish species. Sea turtles are common here, and the visibility is typically clearer because the islands sit far enough offshore that the water stays undisturbed by river runoff or boat traffic from the mainland.
Can I snorkel the whole time, or do I have to spend hours sitting on the beach?
You decide. Most people do two or three snorkeling sessions and spend the rest of the time either floating near the boat, resting on deck, or on the beach during lunch. The crew has no fixed schedule, so if you want to stay in the water longer at one site, you can.
Does the private boat mean I'm alone with the crew, or will there be other groups?
The boat is private to your group only. You choose how many people book it (the operator offers it for one to four people, five to six people, or seven to eight people), and nobody else joins that departure.
What happens if the weather is bad or the park is closed?
Koh Rok closes annually from July through August. If weather forces a cancellation on your booked date, the operator will offer you a different date, an alternative tour, or a full refund.
Is there a national park fee on top of the tour price?
Yes. The national park charges THB 400 per adult and THB 200 per child, payable separately when you arrive at Koh Rok.
