Mangrove kayaking and bioluminescent plankton
- Hotel pickup to Thung Yee Peng Pier
- Safety orientation and board longtail boat
- Longtail boat cruise through mangroves
- Paddle to Laem Kho Kwang for seaside meal
- Boat return and kayak with glowing plankton
The experience
You start with hotel pickup and a safety briefing at Thung Yee Peng Pier. A traditional longtail boat carries you into the mangrove canopy, where the waterways narrow and the light filters green through the leaves. Macaques move through the branches overhead and kingfishers dart between the roots. The boat stays close to shore, making it easy to step onto the beach when you reach Laem Kho Kwang, where the river opens to the sea. Dinner happens here on the sand as the sun drops, and the water turns gold then purple.
After dark, you get into a kayak for the final part. The bioluminescent plankton are a rare phenomenon: each paddle stroke ignites the water in shimmering blue sparks. There is no narration here, no stops. You move through the glow in silence, watching the light trail behind the blade. The effect is strongest when the water is calmest and the night is darkest, so timing and conditions matter, but when it works, it feels like paddling through a dream.
Life jackets are mandatory and included. Drinking water, fruit and a dinner box are provided. Basic travel accident insurance covers injuries during the trip. Wear shorts and water shoes or flip-flops. The water can reach above your knees when boarding and leaving the boat. If you prefer not to kayak, you can request a round-trip mangrove tour by longtail boat instead. Let the operator know before the day starts.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Thai.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 11 years); Infant (2 to 3 years): free.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What exactly is bioluminescent plankton and will I definitely see it?
Bioluminescent plankton are tiny organisms that glow blue when disturbed by movement. They are a natural phenomenon in Ko Lanta's waters, but visibility depends on water conditions and darkness: calm, moonless nights produce the strongest glow. The operator cannot guarantee the effect will appear, but the kayak session happens regardless.
Do I need kayaking experience to paddle through the plankton?
No experience is required. The kayaking portion is calm-water paddling in a protected area, and the guide will brief you on technique before you start. Life jackets are mandatory for all guests.
What happens if I don't want to kayak?
You can request a round-trip mangrove tour by longtail boat instead of the kayaking session. Tell the operator before your tour starts, and you'll stay on the boat for the entire experience.
How long does the whole experience take?
The activity runs 4.5 hours from hotel pickup to return, starting in the afternoon and finishing after dark. The longtail boat portion takes the first part of the day, and the kayaking happens in the final hours as light fades.
What's included in the dinner on the beach?
A dinner box set is provided and eaten on the sand at Laem Kho Kwang as the sun sets. Drinking water and fruit are also included throughout the experience.
