The experience

You start with a full day at Lake Manyara, picked up from your hotel at 8am for a game drive through the park's 205 square miles of acacia forest, giant figs and mahogany. The lake holds hippos, flamingos and a growing baboon population. The park is also known for its tree-climbing lions. From there you move to Ngorongoro Crater, a 102-square-mile natural arena ringed by 2,000-foot walls and home to the largest concentration of African wildlife on the continent, including black rhinos, which are rare across East Africa. The crater floor holds a river, swamps, a soda lake thick with flamingos, forest and open plains.

The core of the tour is 4 nights in the Serengeti, split between the Central Area (where the largest concentration of big cats hunts) and two nights following the Great Migration. The Serengeti spans 6,900 square miles of plains that stretch to the horizon. It holds 2 million wildebeests, hundreds of thousands of zebras, all kinds of antelopes, lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas and over 500 bird species. Which part of the park you visit on the migration nights depends on the season. You may be in the remote North near the Kenya border, the South at Ndutu, or the Western plains. Your guide discusses timing with you each day: you can do a morning game drive, return for lunch and rest, then drive again in the afternoon, or commit to a full day with a picnic lunch. A hot-air balloon flight over the Serengeti plains is available as an extra.

On your final morning, an early game drive catches the animals at their most active and the sunrise over the plains. After brunch at camp, you're driven to the airstrip for a domestic flight back to Arusha or onward to Zanzibar. If you prefer to skip the flight, the operator redesigns the route to end at Ngorongoro and complete the whole journey by 4WD vehicle, saving the flight cost. Accommodation is at Manyara Wildlife Safari Camp, Rhino Lodge and Mbugani Camps. All meals are provided throughout.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want to spend the bulk of your safari time in the Serengeti itself, tracking the Great Migration across remote locations rather than rushing through multiple parks. The 4-night concentration in one park lets you follow the herds as they move and return to the same camps, building rhythm into the days instead of packing in new scenery each night.
