The Experience

How do you fit two UNESCO World Heritage sites into a single day without arranging the transport yourself? This tour handles the 4-hour drive to Sigiriya in an air-conditioned vehicle, picks you up from your hotel, and leaves early so you reach the rock fortress while the light is still manageable for the climb. Sigiriya is a 5th-century granite outcrop rising from flat scrubland, famous enough to have been nominated as the 8th Wonder of the World. You climb it with a professional guide who explains what you are standing inside—a royal palace carved into the rock, with views across the surrounding landscape once you reach the top.

After the climb, you have lunch at a local restaurant before heading to Dambulla, about an hour away. The cave temple complex dates to the 1st century B.C. and holds five interconnected caves with over 2,000 square meters of painted walls and ceilings—the largest area of temple paintings in the world. Inside are more than 150 Buddha images, including a colossal 14-meter figure carved directly from the rock. Your guide walks you through the caves and explains what you are looking at; the scale and the detail of the paintings are what make this site stand out from other cave temples in Sri Lanka.

The return drive takes another 4 hours, so plan for a full day away from your base. You'll need to wear clothes that cover your knees and shoulders inside the temple; the climb itself is steep but manageable if you have moderate fitness.
