The experience
The day starts with pickup from Colombo or Negombo and a drive to Sigiriya, where you climb the 660-foot natural granite rock that holds the ruins of an ancient palace complex. The fortress was built in the 5th century and surrounded itself with gardens, ponds, canals, alleys and fountains: most now visible only as earthworks and foundations. The climb itself takes focus: the rock is steep and the path winds through the remains of fortifications and gateways. From the top, the view reaches across the central plains of Sri Lanka.
After Sigiriya, the tour moves to Dambulla Cave Temple, a Buddhist site constructed between 103 and 77 BC. Five separate caves hold Buddha statues, colorful murals and paintings that span different centuries. The temple is the most visited in Sri Lanka and a UNESCO World Heritage site. You walk through each cave at your own pace, seeing the religious art and understanding how the site evolved over centuries.
The tour runs 15 to 16 hours total and includes an air-conditioned vehicle, bottled water, all entry fees and taxes. Your guide speaks English or German and travels with you throughout. Lunch is not part of the package, so plan to eat at a stop along the route. Wear smart casual clothes: shoulders and knees must be covered when entering the temple. The moderate fitness level needed reflects the Sigiriya climb and the walking between caves.
