The experience
You arrive at Bandaranayake International Airport and meet your Kingfisher representative, then drive toward Sigiriya for day one. The centerpiece is the 5th-century rock fortress itself: you climb the steep staircase past the entrance framed by lion paws, walk through tunnels that once led to the palace, and see the unfading murals that made Sigiriya famous. The terraced gardens and still-working cisterns show how the fortress functioned centuries ago. After descending, you hike Pidurangala Rock for a 360-degree view of Sigiriya from the opposite ridge: the vantage point most visitors miss. A three-hour safari through Minneriya National Park follows, where the dry season (May to October) brings the Great Elephant Gathering: over 150 elephants congregate in one place, alongside mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians across the scrublands and forests.
Day two moves you from Sigiriya toward Kandy through Dambulla. You start with village life: an oxen cart ride, a catamaran safari across a calm lake, a walk through paddy fields at harvest, and a traditional cooking demonstration that teaches Sri Lankan cuisine basics. Lunch is home-cooked over a wood fire and served on fragrant lotus leaves. The Dambulla Cave Temple dates to the 1st century BC and holds five main caves filled with ancient murals of Lord Gautama Buddha's life story, hundreds of Buddha figurines, and a giant golden Buddha statue outside the complex. You visit the Cave of the Divine King, Cave of the Great King and the Great New Monastery. Later, a spice garden tour with a complimentary 10-minute head massage introduces you to Sri Lankan herbs, spices and Ayurvedic benefits grown in the tropical climate. The day ends with the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, a 16th-century UNESCO site with embellished passageways, elaborately painted halls in red, cream and black, carved pillars and golden statues. An evening cultural dance show follows: fire dancers, sword dancers and Kandyan dancers perform to primal drum beats for an hour.
Day three in Kandy includes a gemmological museum exploring Sri Lanka's history as "Ratna Deepa" (Gem Island), with displays of cutting and polishing techniques. A Ceylon tea factory visit shows how Pure Ceylon Tea is prepared, with tastings of different flavors. You then return to the airport with time to spare. Your private air-conditioned vehicle and English-speaking driver-guide remain with you throughout. All local taxes and charges are covered.

Top questions
Can I book a private car instead of a van for this 3-day tour?
Yes. Kingfisher Tours offers the itinerary in both a private car and a private van. You choose which at checkout based on your group size and luggage needs.
What is the Sigiriya Rock Fortress and why is it called Lion Rock?
Sigiriya Rock Fortress is a 5th-century AD palace built atop a dramatic rock outcrop. The entrance is framed by the carved paws of a lion, which is how it earned the name Lion Rock. You climb through tunnels, past ancient murals and terraced gardens to reach the summit.
Does the tour include meals and entrance fees?
The tour includes a home-cooked lunch on day two as part of the village experience. Entrance fees to Sigiriya, Dambulla Cave Temple, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and other attractions are not included and are paid separately.
When is the best time to see the Great Elephant Gathering at Minneriya National Park?
The Great Elephant Gathering happens during the dry season between May and October, when over 150 elephants congregate in one place. The safari also offers chances to see other mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians.
What happens on the final morning before heading to the airport?
Day three includes a visit to a gemmological museum in Kandy exploring Sri Lanka's gem-cutting and polishing heritage, followed by a Pure Ceylon Tea factory tour with tastings of different tea flavors. You then depart for the airport with plenty of time before your flight.
