The experience

The route moves through two of Sri Lanka's most important cultural cities over three days, starting from your Colombo hotel. Day one takes you to Kandy, where you visit a spice garden and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic: a 17th-century Buddhist shrine believed to house the left upper canine tooth of the Buddha himself. White-clad pilgrims bearing lotus blossoms and frangipani visit daily, and the temple sits at the center of Kandy's long history as a Buddhist faith center.

Day two moves toward Sigiriya through Dambulla, where the cave temple complex spreads across five chambers inside a rock that towers 160 meters above the plains. The caves hold 153 Buddha statues, three statues of Sri Lankan kings, and four statues of gods including Vishnu and Ganesha, along with murals covering 2,100 square meters that depict Buddha's life and teachings. After lunch at a local restaurant, you shift to a 4WD jungle safari jeep and enter Minneriya National Park to watch herds of wild elephants and other animals in their habitat.

The final day centers on Sigiriya Rock Fortress itself, the ancient palace and rock-shelter monastery built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century AD and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the 8th Wonder of the World. The fortress sits surrounded by gardens and reservoirs, and features the Mirror Wall (originally polished so well the king could see his reflection) along with frescoes and defensive structures that date to the 5th century. A private air-conditioned vehicle with driver and a guide speaking English or Korean stays with you throughout. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, and the driver's accommodation is covered.
