The experience

The tour starts at Colombo airport and moves straight into the landscape. Sigiriya Rock Fortress rises dramatically from the central plains, a near-vertical climb to a flat-topped summit where an ancient civilization once ruled. The vistas across mist-wrapped forests in early morning are what make the hike worth the effort. On the same day you also visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, a World Heritage Site and the largest cave temple complex in Sri Lanka, situated 148 kilometres east of Colombo.

From there the route turns toward Kandy, where the Temple of the Sacred Tooth houses Sri Lanka's most important Buddhist relic. The tooth itself stays locked inside a series of gold caskets shaped like dagobas, but the complex includes smaller temples, shrines and museums. During puja (offerings or prayers), the heavily guarded room opens to devotees and tourists. A climb to the Kandy viewpoint overlooks the lake and the city, though the area draws peddlers and pickpockets, so watch your belongings. The next leg takes you into the hill country toward Ella, passing through the Glenloch Tea Factory in Nuwara Eliya District, where you see how Sri Lanka earned its reputation as the world's top tea producer. Ramboda Falls, at 109 metres high, drops along the A5 highway at 945 metres above sea level. The Sita Amman Temple sits five kilometres from Nuwara Eliya on the road to Kandy, dedicated to Sita and considered the only such temple in the world. In Ella itself, the perspectives through Ella Gap are staggering: on a clear evening you can see the Great Basses beacon on the south coast.

The final day moves from Ella to Udawalawe National Park for a jeep safari, passing the Ravana Cave near Ella town on the way. Udawalawe is home to several hundred wild elephants and other rare wildlife. After the safari you return to Colombo for your departure. Throughout the five days you travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking driver who acts as guide, stay in 4-star hotels in Colombo, Sigiriya and Kandy and a 3-star or boutique hotel in Ella, and receive breakfast and dinner each night. A bottle of water is provided daily. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, and you'll need comfortable walking shoes for temple visits and the Sigiriya climb. All visitors to Buddhist and Hindu temples must remove footwear and hats, and cover shoulders and knees.
