The Experience

We rolled out of Colombo in a sleepy haze, our driver waving us off with a grin that felt like an old friend’s. First real stop was Ambepussa for breakfast — I still remember the smell of cardamom drifting from the kitchen while I tried to order tea in my best attempt at Sinhala (the waiter just smiled and brought me two kinds anyway). By the time we reached Kandy, the air had shifted—cooler, laced with incense from the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Our guide, Priyantha, told stories about kings and relics as we wandered between monks in saffron robes. The evening cultural show was loud and wild—drums shaking your chest—then suddenly quiet inside the temple itself.

The next morning started early; Sigiriya Rock Fortress doesn’t wait for anyone. Climbing those ancient steps with sweat stinging my eyes, I wondered if I’d make it up—but when you look back down over the jungle mist, it’s worth every shaky knee. Lunch was a village safari near Hiriwadunna—homemade curry eaten with our hands under a thatched roof, chickens wandering around our feet. Later that day we bumped along in a jeep watching wild elephants graze at sunset. It’s strange how quickly you get used to red dust on your skin.

Tea plantations outside Kandy were next—so green it almost hurts your eyes. We met women plucking leaves faster than I could say “Ceylon,” their laughter echoing through the rows. The fresh-brewed tea they handed us tasted nothing like what I drink at home; maybe it was just being there that made it different. Ramboda Falls thundered nearby (I got sprayed trying to take a photo), and then Nuwara Eliya appeared out of nowhere—all chilly air and faded colonial houses. Locals call it Little England but honestly it felt more like somewhere between worlds.

The train ride from Nanu Oya to Ella is as beautiful as everyone says—windows open, wind tangling my hair while kids waved from villages along the tracks. In Ella we found ourselves standing on that famous Nine Arch Bridge just as a blue train rumbled past (everyone cheered). The next day was all about waterfalls again—Ravana Falls this time—and then suddenly we were at Bentota beach with sand stuck between our toes and salt drying on our skin.

Our last day slipped by in Colombo: Gangaramaya Temple’s bells ringing above city noise, quick shopping stops where I haggled badly for souvenirs, and one final walk along Galle Face Green watching kites against a bruised sky. Hard to believe six days could hold so much—I still think about those train tracks cutting through tea fields sometimes when I can’t sleep.
