The experience

The tour starts in Colombo and moves inland toward the central highlands. On the first day, you visit a spice garden near Rambukkana where you learn about Sri Lankan herbs and their uses in Ayurveda, then tour a gem museum and gallery to understand the island's sapphire and precious stone trade before arriving in Kandy. That evening you watch the Kandy Cultural Show, an hour of fire dancers, sword dancers and Kandyan drummers on stage.

Day two takes you to Dambulla and Sigiriya. The Golden Temple of Dambulla holds five caves dating to the 1st century BC, filled with ancient murals of Buddha's life and hundreds of Buddha figurines. Then you climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a 5th-century palace built by King Kasyapa on a sheer rock face. The entrance is framed by massive lion paws, and the steep staircase leads through terraced gardens and working cisterns to the summit. After Sigiriya, a three-hour safari through Minneriya National Park puts you among over 150 elephants during the dry season gathering, plus other mammals, birds and reptiles.

Day three shifts to village life. You ride an oxen cart through paddy fields, take a catamaran across a calm lake, and watch a traditional cooking demonstration before eating a home-cooked lunch served on lotus leaves. The route then climbs toward Nuwara Eliya, a hill station 6,200 feet up where the British built Georgian and Queen Anne homes, churches and gardens that still stand. You stop at a tea estate to pluck tea leaves yourself, then visit the factory to see how Ceylon tea is processed.

The final day explores the tea region around Nuwara Eliya. You visit Ramboda Falls, the 11th tallest waterfall in the country, walk through the shaded paths and colorful mazes of Hakgala Botanical Gardens, and stroll along Lake Gregory before heading to Colombo or the airport.
