The experience
Kandy sits in a valley surrounded by mountains and tea estates, and the tour starts there after leaving Colombo. You visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, a UNESCO World Heritage site in the royal palace complex and one of Buddhism's holiest places. The temple sits next to Kandy Lake, built in 1807, where you can climb the hill overlooking the water for views across the city. In the evening, you watch a Kandy cultural show: 12 different traditional dances performed to ceremonial drums, including fire and harvest dances that run for about an hour.
The second day takes you from Kandy into the cooler highlands toward Nuwara Eliya. On the way, you stop at Glenloch Tea Factory to see how Ceylon tea is grown and processed in the high-altitude plantations that made Sri Lanka famous for the crop. You also visit Gregory Lake, created in 1873 by a British governor and now a quiet spot for walking. Nuwara Eliya itself sits high enough that the air feels noticeably different. The town has botanical gardens full of orchids and roses, and nearby Seetha Amman Temple sits in a village setting with Hindu religious figures carved into the rock.
The third day centers on Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a 200-meter column of stone that rises from the surrounding plain near Dambulla. The climb itself is the main event: if you move steadily without stopping, it takes about 30 minutes to reach the top. If you pause often for photos or need breaks, plan on an hour and a half to two hours for the round trip. Before or after Sigiriya, you visit Dambulla Cave Temple, the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in the country, with five caves carved into the rock and filled with Buddhist statues and murals. The Sigiriya Museum nearby documents three decades of archaeological research on the fortress and its design systems.
